So, for them it was a joy to observe, and in the manner of a craftsman they would run their hand along the edge of such fine work, then with a smile comment, “jak slicznie” (how beautiful). They recognized the woodwork as being beyond their skill levels.
This wagon was a favorite of my grandfather and other carpenters of our neighborhood. The “reading wagon,” where fortunes were told and tarot cards revealed the future, was ornate and the woodwork was clearly that of a master craftsman. Aware of such skills, my grandmother and other neighborhood women would routinely bring to the camp broken pots and pans that they could have repaired for a reasonable price.
They were also very skilled at repairing cookware. Almost all of what was sold had been made by these gypsies. Hanging behind the gypsy wagon owner would be such items as painted and decorated pots, specially designed bracelets, golden earrings, and many other items for sale or trade. Occasionally, a wagon was constructed in such a way that the exterior wall might be lowered to serve as a way to interrelate with passers-by or customers.
